The audio quality of a spot I recorded is poor. What am I doing wrong?
If the spot you recorded sounds like it was recorded using last-century technology from deep inside a cave, there are a few things you can try:
- Increase the distance between your mouth and the microphone. If you’re too close, your breathing will negatively influence the recording.
- Experiment with adjusting the three volumes you control. The first is the microphone port’s input volume. You can adjust this in Windows in the Sounds and Audio Devices control panel. The second volume is your system volume. Keep your system’s overall volume at a mid level while you record spots. The third is your own voice. Try lowering the microphone input volume but speak a little louder.
- Try a different input. Many computers have both a “Line In” and a “Microphone” input. One might work better than the other.
- Try another microphone. If all else fails, you might want to try a different microphone. Some older mics do a poor job of eliminating background noise or may simply be bustified.
